As I reflect on gratitude, I’m reminded why this journey we’re on is so rare—and so powerful. We live in a world that constantly shouts, more, more, more. Nearly 3,000 years ago, the sage Agur wrote, “The leech has two daughters: Give and Give.” Some things never change.

In a culture obsessed with consumption, it takes intention to look past the noise and rediscover the treasures that truly satisfy.

Because there is a fine balance. It is good to seek for more—not only for ourselves but for the world. Progression toward a worthy goal is what produces positive emotion, and produces greater life experience for those whom that worthy goal affects. But we must also be fully satisfied with the priceless gift that is life itself—the power to perceive this miracle we call reality.

It is from this state of purposeful action, founded in a state of satisfied rest, that we develop abundant life for ourselves and all of those our lives touch.

Today, let’s pause and give thanks for every good thing we’ve experienced, even the smallest glimpse of love, beauty, or joy. Each moment was worth it all—each moment touched eternity.

As we grow in knowledge, perception, and experience, so grows our ability to recognize life’s true riches—and to be increasingly grateful for them.
